Sweat stains and foul odor can be an embarrassment and a discomfort. With miraDry® treatment at Plastic Surgery Consultants, you can overcome these issues and find dry relief. We offer this treatment to men and women living in Columbia, Lexington, and the neighboring areas of South Carolina.
How Does miraDry® Work?
miraDry® treatment is simple and fairly comfortable. First, the armpits are numbed with a local anesthetic. Then, the miraDry® system emits gentle energy to target and destroy sweat glands. Using deep heating combined with surface cooling, the sweat glands are safely destroyed while keeping the skin’s surface at a comfortable and safe temperature. A single miraDry® session takes approximately 60 minutes.
Is There Any Downtime After miraDry®Treatment?
The miraDry® technique is non-invasive and gentle, so patients can resume work and other normal activities immediately after their appointment with generally no downtime required. Rigorous physical activity that use the arms (like golf or weight lifting) is discouraged for the first 48 hours after treatment. Most patients experience mild swelling for 24-48 hours after treatment and some bruising is expected. Ice and ibuprofen are recommended for the first 12-24 hours.
What is Hyperhidrosis?
Hyperhidrosis is a condition characterized by excessive sweating, specifically in the armpits. This can cause significant discomfort and embarrassment, leading many to seek out a solution. miraDry® can be especially effective in treating those with hyperhidrosis. The treatment uses gentle energy to target and destroy the sweat glands, drastically reducing underarm sweat. Patients don’t have to worry about complications arising from eliminating these sweat glands because only 2% of the body’s 2 million sweat glands are located in the armpits. This means that there are many other outlets for sweat to safely escape.
What Kind of Results Can I Expect from miraDry® Treatment?
The miraDry® treatment is an effective solution for sweat stains and foul odor that takes effect immediately. Typically, only one treatment is required, but depending on the extent of your condition, sometimes a second treatment is necessary. Following the procedure, patients will enjoy a dramatic reduction in underarm sweating that allows them to feel comfortable and confident wherever they go. Most deodorant and antiperspirant produces about a 20% decrease in the overall sweat production in the underarms, prescription deodorant and antiperspirants can reduce armpit sweat by about 30%. MiraDry has been tested to decrease underarm sweat by as much as 82% in one treatment.
